TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURES (Continued)
MALFUNCTION

3.
ENGINE WILL NOT CRANK
Step 1.
Check battery cells specific gravity (refer to TM 5-1940-277-20).
a.
Replace battery (refer to TM 5-1940-277-20).
b.
If battery check satisfactory go to step 2.
Step 2.
Check-for defective starting switch (refer to TM 5-1940-277-20).
a.
Replace defective starting switch (refer to TM 5-1940-277-20).
b.
If switch operates correctly go to step 3.
Step 3.
Check for faulty wiring and connections (refer to page 2-109).
a.
Repair faulty wiring (refer to page 2-109).
b.
If wiring satisfactory go to step 4.
Step 4.
Test starter (refer to TM 5-1940-277-20).
a.
If voltage not present replace starter solenoid (refer to TM 5-1940-277-20).
b.
If voltage present but starter does not function replace starter (refer to TM 5-1940-277-20).
Step 5.
Check for hydrostatic lock.
a.
Attempt to hand crank engine.
b.
If engine will not turn over by hand, remove injectors one at a time until locked cylinders are
freed. (Refer to TM 5-1940-277-20).
c.
If engines still will not turn go to step 6.
