B.1.1.1
This Appendix provides an explanation of maintenance and repair functions authorized at
various maintenance levels under the standard Army Maintenance System concept. The
Maintenance Allocation Chart (MAC), shown in Table B 1, designates overall authority
and responsibility for the performance of maintenance functions on the identified items.
(For the purposes of this section, "item" refers to a module, component or assembly.) The
application of the maintenance functions to the item is consistent with the capacities and
capabilities of the designated maintenance level, detailed in column (4) of the MAC, as
follows:
Unit - two sub-columns, C (operator/crew) and O (unit) maintenance.
Direct Support - one sub-column, F.
General Support / Specialized Repair Activity - one sub-column, H.
Depot / Specialized Repair Activity - has one sub-column, D.

and special test equipment, required for each maintenance function, as referenced from
the maintenance levels in column (4) of the MAC.

Maintenance Functions
B.1.2.1
Maintenance functions are limited to and defined as:
Adjust. To maintain or regulate within prescribed limits, by bringing into proper position
or by setting the operating characteristics to specified parameters.
Align. To adjust specified variable elements of an item, to bring about optimum or
desired performance.
Calibrate. To determine and cause corrections to be made or to be adjusted on
instruments or Test Measurement and Diagnostic Equipment (TMDE), used in precision
measurement. Calibration is the comparison of two instruments (one of which is to a
certified standard of known accuracy), to detect and adjust any discrepancy in the
accuracy of the instrument being compared.
